Football Fields & Deals

Early in business, its easy to believe you're there for one thing:

Score.

Close the deal. Win the project. Drive the number.

And for a while - to be fair — that holds true… until it isn’t.

Because the longer you stay in the game, therole reveals itself more fully:
you’re not just the striker.

You’re also the goalkeeper.

Some days, leadership is ambition —seeing the opening, stepping in, finishing with conviction.

Other days, it’s discipline —absorbing pressure, correcting what almost broke, holding the line when the work feels anything but glamorous.

That’s the part no one really talks about:staying the course when there’s no applause attached.

The irony?

The goals get remembered.
The saves are what made them possible.

Most leaders drift to one extreme.

The strikers create momentum… and sometimes problems that didn’t need to exist. The goalkeepers preserve stability… and sometimes hold the business back from its own potential.

The ones who build things that last understand something a bit more subtle — but far more powerful:

Rhythm.

When to press. When to pause. When to move decisively… and when to hold position.

Because at a certain level, leadership isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing what’s required — at the right moment.

A good week feels like progress.

A great one?You handled what could have gone wrong…and still found a way to move things forward.

That’s not balance.

That’s awareness.That’s timing.

That’s leadership.

In hindsight leadership isn’t about being one or the other.

It’s about knowing when to save, when to score, and how to never miss the moments that matter.
